Prima Choir – Magnificats

[two_third]According to the Gospel of Luke (1:46-55), the Magnificats were utterances by Mary to her cousin Elizabeth, who was then pregnant with John the Baptist. Over the ages, many composers set Magnificats to music, and the UVic Prima Choir joined up with the Victoria Chamber Orchestra to perform the pieces by JS Bach and Vivaldi in the Fall 2010 season. You can listen to and download our music on this page.[/two_third] [one_third_last] [learn_more caption=”About Prima”]Prima is a 70-voice SATB choir based in Victoria BC, comprised of mostly University of Victoria students, and is a non-credit ensemble of the University of Victoria School of Music. [/tooltip] [learn_more caption=”More About Bach’s Magnificat”]The Magnificat in D-major is a piece that I wish I knew and appreciate more about before singing it. The Flying Inkpot gives a run-down of the structure. The third movement sang by the soprano gives me chills every time I listen to it.

There’s an Easter egg to the fourth movement Omnes Generationes (All Generations): the voices not only sing out the scale with their entrances, but they also make a precise number of entrances. 41, to be precise – the exact number of generations that the Bible holds to have passed between Abraham and Christ. You can “see” the structure in this brilliant YouTube video. [/learn_more] [/two_third] [one_third_last][box type=”shadow”] Conducted by Yariv Aloni.
