Here is an RGB swatch palette for chemical elements, using the Jmol/JSmol convention as defined on its wiki page. This is an ASE (Adobe Swatch Exchange) file and should be of use across the entire Creative Cloud suite (including Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign). Download here [icon name=”icon-download”]; details, installations, and caveats follow.
- Jmol/JSmol is meant for screen, so the colors were given as RGB values. Quite a large number of the colors falls outside the CMYK gamut, and there will be a subtle — but noticeable — shift when printed.
- The palette contains only the 118 elements. None of the isotopes or amino acid shortcuts are presented.
- On OSX Mavericks, for Illustrator these installs to ~/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Adobe Illustrator X/language/Swatches/. Note that Library is a hidden folder. Access information here.
The swatches were defined as Global Colors to preserve flexibility at later stages. Each swatch appears twice, once in the full stack of elements (arranged according to atomic number), and again in categories. Both of these refer to the same color; when one is updated the other would follow (along with all art that uses that color).
